Some men would give you the shirt off their back. Until you spit in their face over a handful of pecans.

This is the moment from one of my grandpa's stories I'll never forget.

It was 1949. Grandpa was coming home from the McAlester coal mines, walking up to his own forty acres — pecan and walnut trees along the property line, the railroad running right past the place. That day he came home and found a whole family on his land. A big woman with her apron full of his pecans. Several men loading toe sacks. And a little boy off to the side with his own little sack.

Now grandpa was a hard man — coal miner, built like a barrel — but he was fair. He looked at that hungry family come in off the railroad and he felt for them. Made a quiet decision in his heart to let it go. Just walk away and let them take what they needed.

But before he turned, he looked at that little boy and asked him one small thing: "Son, could I have just one pecan? I'm hungry myself."

That boy looked grandpa dead in the eye and shouted — "NO! These are MY pecans. Get your own!"

Grandpa's grace evaporated on the spot. He told that whole family to get off his property, leave the pecans where they lay, and get gone. And they did. He carried that day the rest of his life — not bitter, he'd laugh telling it — because it taught him a principle he never let go of:

You cannot be nice to people you catch stealing from you. Mistake a man's kindness for weakness, and you don't get the kindness anymore.

That principle doesn't have a color. It doesn't have an accent. It works on every kind of man.
